This was written for T.H.E Dance Company's 'Un-form' (2013), a piece by choreographer Kuik Swee Boon which concerned the wider role of the artist in relation to society. Performed by Lee Mun Wai, Sherry Tay and Jessica Christina, 'Un-form' gave the audience a glimpse into the psyche of each dancer, revealing poignant questions and moments of tension encountered during the pursuit of their artistic dreams.

I was given an open brief of freely re-imagining an Indonesian folk song titled 'Sing Sing So', bringing its relevance as a old song from Jessica's homeland into the present.

"A sing sing so….
O boat & wind
Please bring me to my
Maternal uncle's house
To meet my soul mate who is
Bethrothed to me
My heart do not be sad
If she has yet to exist
Your luck will brighten
As bright as the sun
When the time comes."

I interpreted the idea of unity within the translated lyrics from a Jungian point of view; the union of the masculine and the feminine being symbolic of the individual integrating with their anima / animus (or unconscious personality) to achieve self-realisation. In developing the composition, I translated this concept of 'becoming' as an impressionistic journey across the turbulent waters of the subconscious to new shores of the self.
